Good Samaritan law

One of the most common concerns people have about administering CPR or first aid is liability: "What if I try to help and something goes wrong? Can I be sued?" The answer, in Oklahoma, is clear — the law protects you.

Your protection under the law

In Oklahoma, the Title 76, Section 5 of Oklahoma Statutes provides legal protection to anyone who renders emergency assistance in good faith. Three elements: (1) voluntary/uncompensated emergency medical aid, (2) person did not cause the emergency, (3) no gross negligence or intentional wrongdoing.

This protection explicitly extends to the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), statute: Title 76, Section 5 of Oklahoma Statutes. If you use an AED to help someone in cardiac arrest, you are protected from liability.

No duty to act, but every reason to

Oklahoma does not impose a legal duty to rescue. You are not required by law to intervene in an emergency. But if you choose to help — and we believe you should — the Good Samaritan law ensures you are protected from liability for your good-faith efforts.

The question isn’t whether you’re legally required to help. It’s whether you’ll be ready when it matters. CPR training gives you the confidence and skills to act decisively when someone’s life is on the line.

Good Samaritan laws protect people who act in good faith. But confidence to act comes from training.
