Signs — Heatstroke

Hot skin — red, dry, or clammy
High body temperature (> 40 °C)
Confusion, disorientation
Severe headache
Nausea or vomiting
Rapid, strong pulse
Possible loss of consciousness

🫀 Dehydration — Cardiac arrhythmiaDehydration can cause severe cardiac arrhythmia. Hydrate as soon as possible with water or an electrolyte solution, in small amounts.

🧠 Similar diagnoses to rule outThe signs of heatstroke resemble other conditions: head trauma, stroke, hypoglycemia. Be precise in your questioning.

🫀 Associated chest painIf the victim reports chest pain, refer to the chest pain protocol.

💧 Gradual hydrationGive small amounts of water or electrolyte-containing fluid only if the victim is conscious and able to swallow. Never force.

📊 Continuous reassessmentFrequently reassess vital signs (ABC) and body temperature until help arrives.

PROTOCOL — HEATSTROKE

Immediate actions — All victims

🏃 Move to a cool place
In the shade, indoors with air conditioning if possible

🌬 Ensure good ventilation
Fan, open windows, active air circulation

👕 Remove clothing
Expose as much body surface as possible

💦 Moisten the entire body surface
Cool (not iced) water — sponge or spray

Is the victim alert?

YES — Alert

💧 Give to drink in small amounts
Cool water or electrolyte-containing fluid
As soon as the victim can swallow safely

If drowsiness appears:
→ place in the recovery position + reassess

📊 Frequently reassess vital signs (ABC)

📞 Seek care at a hospital
by calling 911

NO — Not alert

🚫 Give nothing by mouth

Place in the recovery position
